French artist, born in the Jewish Pale of Settlement in Russia and considered one of the most celebrated painters of the 20th century. Chagall took inspiration from Jewish folk-life, and portrayed many Biblical themes reflecting his pious background, the joy and suffering of his people and the tumultuous modern world. Chagall`s work was influenced by several modern art movements, including avant-garde, fauvism, and cubism. His large oeuvre of paintings, etchings, lithographs and other media combines happiness and optimism with nostalgia and longing, using vivid colors and fantasy images.
